House training is undoubtedly the one aspect of dog training that is essential to ensure that your dog becomes a valued member of your family. As with many other aspects of dog training, the best method of achieving a successfully house trained dog is to use your dog’s own nature to your advantage.
A wonderful thing about dogs that can make house training much easier, is that dogs are instinctively very clean animals. The majority of dogs would rather not soil the areas where they sleep and eat. In addition, dogs are very good at developing habits. This can be used to your benefit in relation to establishing a set place for your dog to urinate and defecate. For example, dogs that are used to eliminating on concrete or gravel will prefer to eliminate there rather than on grass or dirt. It is possible, and desirable, to use these natural canine tendencies when house training your dog.
The first step in house training your dog is to set up your training area. A small, confined space such as a bathroom, or part of a kitchen or garage, works best as a training area. This method of training differs from crate training. Crate training is great for puppies and small dogs, but many larger adult dogs find a crate too confining if they haven’t been used to it from an early stage.
Well first of all I was always a cat owner, till my husband bought our first Chihuahua (Stitch) in 2002, Stitch was about 6 weeks old and was generally purchased for our children and it stud that was till he was about 5 months or so. Then I started to notice that he was starting to favor me and follow me around more and more everyday, one day I hid from him and watched him run up and down the hallway from the crack in the bedroom door, until he found me and it just melted my heart, my cats never did that and after that he became ALL MINE Stitch stole my heart. Around a month later my mother handed down her old sewing machine to me, I tried making everything that came to mind but nothing ever turned out perfect, but I kept sewing anyways.
Although some cats will respond to positive reinforcement, most cats generally do better if they are working for food rewards. If you use soft moist cat food or dry food as a treat, you will lessen the chance of disturbing a properly balanced diet. If your cat has performed a certain task you have asked of them, make sure you not only reward them with a food treat but with verbal praise as well.
Train Ride
Give your kitty a ride! Using an empty shoe box, tie string through a hole in the box, put kitty in the box and pull them around the house.
Cat and Mouse
Also known as hide and seek. Let kitty chase you. Hide and let them find you. Chase kitty. Give them a moment to hide then find them.
Scratching
Scratching is a normal behavior in cats. Cats have scent glands in their feet and when they scratch, they not only sharpen their claws, but they mark scent as well. Cats will also scratch before, during and after play; after awaking to get a good “stretch” and when protecting themselves from animals or humans which they find threatening.
Cats learn by experience. If something is pleasant, they will want to do it again. If it is unpleasant, they won’t want to keep doing it. Before training your cat, determine how well they will respond to training. Familiarize yourself with the different breeds of cats and their temperaments. It is also a good idea to spay or neuter your cat. Not only does this benefit your cat’s health, it reduces or eliminates many behavior issues, such as spraying or howling while in heat.
